FIRE CONTROL TOWER #23
CAPE MAY, NEW JERSEY
Built 1942, this tower was used for spotting and targeting enemy ships and is the last free standing WWII Lookout Tower in NJ. Plans to preserve and open a restored tower to the public were developed by the Mid Atlantic Center for the Arts. HMR provided extensive historic research, recommendations for interpretation and, directed a full restoration that included extensive concrete rehabilitation, the insertion of new stairs and restoration of the millwork on the observation and day room levels. The tower is now open on a daily basis to visitors.
Recipient of a 2009 Historic Preservation Award from the NJ Historic Preservation Office.
